#Nigerians More Religious Than Godly – Ishaq Oloyede

The Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, has observed that Nigerians are generally religious but not necessarily godly. He pointed out that many Nigerians tend to rely on prayers rather than hard work, believing that being religious alone will bring them success. Oloyede urged Nigerians to utilize the abundant resources in the country to improve its current situation. He emphasized the need for Nigerians to tap into the agricultural potential of the country, highlighting the vast arable land, water, and favorable weather suitable for various crops in different regions.

Speaking at a lecture titled “Duties of Muslim Citizens in National Development,” which took place in Ikole Ekiti, Ekiti State, during the First Aare Sulaiman Afolabi Ogunlayi Ramadan Lecture organized by House of Representatives member Akin Rotimi, Oloyede stressed that religion could be a solution to the nation’s challenges if properly utilized. He emphasized the importance of combining prayer with hard work and making the most of the country’s natural endowments.

Oloyede also lamented the country’s overreliance on oil as a source of income, neglecting other valuable resources. He highlighted the positive impact of religion on socio-economic development but stressed the need to overcome ethnic divisions and maximize the benefits of religious unity.

Rotimi, the organizer of the lecture, celebrated Ogunlayi for his contributions to religion and politics in the state and country, calling on political leaders to honor and appreciate patriotic citizens while they are still alive. In response, Ogunlayi expressed gratitude for the recognition, noting the importance of acknowledging individuals during their lifetime rather than posthumously.
