CONSULTANS ADVICE:
The establishment of the NorthWest Development Commission (NWDC) presents a historic opportunity to address the long-standing developmental challenges in the region. It is imperative that the Commission rises to the occasion by ensuring that its policies, programs, and projects translate into meaningful and lasting progress for the people.
The task ahead is enormous, requiring careful planning, strategic execution, and the engagement of competent professionals. While the Commission is an initiative for the Northwest, development should not be constrained by regional considerations. To achieve excellence, NWDC must seek out the best expertise available—regardless of ethnic or regional background—ensuring that competence, experience, and innovation drive decision-making. The leadership must be proactive in engaging specialists who can provide valuable insights, best practices, and technical knowledge necessary for effective implementation of its mandate.
Avoiding Political Pitfalls and Prioritizing Development
One of the greatest risks to the success of the NWDC is the tendency to prioritize political considerations over genuine developmental needs. The Commission must resist the urge to award contracts based on political or personal loyalty at the expense of the region’s progress. The focus must remain on results—ensuring that every project leads to tangible improvements in infrastructure, economic empowerment, education, healthcare, and security.
In the past, similar commissions and initiatives have suffered setbacks due to nepotism, mismanagement, and lack of accountability. This must not be the case with the NWDC. Transparency, efficiency, and a strong commitment to service delivery must define its operations. The Commission should establish clear benchmarks for success, periodic evaluations, and open communication with stakeholders to build trust and ensure accountability.
Harnessing the Northwest’s Untapped Potential
The Northwest region is rich in human and natural resources, yet it has faced significant economic and security challenges over the years. The presence of industries, agriculture, trade hubs, and mineral deposits offers great potential for economic revival. If properly harnessed, these assets can stimulate job creation, reduce poverty, and improve the overall standard of living.
Key areas of focus should include:
Infrastructure development – Upgrading roads, bridges, and transportation networks to facilitate trade and commerce.
Education and skills acquisition – Expanding access to quality education and vocational training to empower the youth.
Agricultural transformation – Modernizing farming techniques, supporting local farmers, and enhancing food security.
Security and stability Addressing banditry, insurgency, and other security threats that hinder development.
Industrial growth. Encouraging investments in manufacturing, technology, and entrepreneurship.
President Tinubu’s Vision for Balanced National Development
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration has demonstrated its commitment to ensuring balanced development across Nigeria’s geopolitical zones. The approval of the NWDC is a testament to this vision, and it is now up to the Commission to translate this vision into reality. This is not just about developing the North-West—it is about contributing to a stronger, more united, and more prosperous Nigeria.
The people of the Northwest have long awaited meaningful progress, and this is a defining moment to deliver on that promise. With visionary leadership, strategic partnerships, and an unwavering commitment to excellence, the NWDC can achieve remarkable milestones that will leave a lasting legacy.
We extend our best wishes to the Chairman and management of the NWDC as they embark on this noble task. May their efforts bring about true transformation and renewed hope for the people of the Northwest and Nigeria as a whole.
