President Bola Tinubu has explained that the recently approved reforms to the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) are designed to better prepare young Nigerians with practical skills needed for personal growth and national development.

In a statement shared on his verified X account on Wednesday, the President said the reforms, approved by the Federal Executive Council (FEC) on Monday, reflect his administration’s commitment to creating greater opportunities for young people.
Tinubu recalled that during his inauguration, he pledged to prioritise the welfare and empowerment of Nigerian youths and women, describing the NYSC reforms as part of the fulfilment of that promise.

According to the President, the changes represent the most significant overhaul of the NYSC scheme since it was established in 1973.
He acknowledged the role the scheme has played in promoting national unity over the past five decades but stressed that evolving national realities now require a more modern approach.

Tinubu maintained that while preserving the NYSC’s core objective of fostering unity among Nigerians remains important, the reforms are intended to make the programme more relevant by equipping corps members with practical knowledge and skills that will contribute to the country’s development.
