Former Minister of State for Defence, Musiliu Obanikoro, has said the controversy surrounding the Muslim-Muslim presidential ticket played a major role in President Bola Tinubu’s defeat in Lagos State during the 2023 general election.
Speaking during an interview on a podcast, Obanikoro argued that concerns over the religious composition of the presidential ticket, rather than the popularity of Labour Party candidate Peter Obi, influenced the outcome in Lagos.
He said many voters feared that a Muslim-Muslim presidency could sideline Christians, but maintained that those concerns have not materialised since Tinubu assumed office.
Obanikoro described President Tinubu as someone who does not discriminate based on religion, noting that members of his family and administration include Christians. He added that the President has demonstrated inclusiveness in governance and has not shown religious bias.
