The Oyo State Police Command has announced the arrest and detention of several officers involved in the shooting incident on Monday that resulted in the death of Damilola Iyanda, an ex-student of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso, at a club in Ogbomoso.
In a statement released on Thursday by its Public Relations Officer, Adewale Osifeso (SP), the command declared that Inspector Rasheed Saheed, who allegedly killed Iyanda, along with other officers involved, has been detained at the State Criminal Investigation Department in Iyaganku, Ibadan. The Commissioner of Police has directed that the case be handled by the Homicide Department of the State Criminal Investigation Department, with the Deputy Commissioner of Police overseeing the investigation.
The statement clarified the events leading to the shooting, stating that the police received a distress call from the director of a nightclub reporting harassment and property destruction by suspected student cultists. Upon arrival at the scene, the police encountered resistance from the suspected cultists, leading to a confrontation in which shots were fired, resulting in Iyanda’s death and the injury of his brother.
Meanwhile, LAUTECH management issued a statement confirming that the incident did not occur on the university campus but at a club outside the campus. They clarified that Iyanda Femi Israel, an ex-student of the university, sustained a gunshot wound during the incident and was hospitalized. The university management expressed condolences to the deceased’s family and assured the community of its commitment to safety and welfare.
