The Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede, has urged young Nigerians to actively participate in the fight against corruption and financial crimes across the country.
He made the call on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, during a visit by students of Adamawa State University to the EFCC headquarters in Jabi, Abuja. He was represented at the event by the Head of Public Interface in the Public Affairs Department, Assistant Commander of the EFCC (ACE I), Tony Orilade.
Olukoyede described corruption as one of the most serious challenges facing Nigeria, stressing that collective action is needed to secure a better future and improve national development.
He warned that without a united effort against corruption, the country risks continued unemployment, underdevelopment, and loss of opportunities, adding that the EFCC cannot succeed alone without public support.
Officials of the Commission also emphasized that prevention is a key part of the EFCC’s mandate. The Head of Enlightenment and Reorientation Unit, ACE II, Aisha Mohammed, explained that the agency engages in public awareness campaigns, school-based integrity programmes, media outreach, and partnerships with organizations such as the NYSC and civil society groups to promote ethical values.
She encouraged citizens to embrace whistleblowing and speak out against wrongdoing, noting that corruption thrives when people remain silent.
During the session, Deputy Superintendent of the EFCC, DSE Ogunjuobi Philip, also educated the students on cybercrime, describing it as the illegal use of ICT tools and internet services.
He explained that cybercrime includes both cyber-dependent offences like hacking, phishing, malware attacks, and ransomware, as well as cyber-enabled crimes such as romance scams and online fraud schemes.
He warned that cybercrime damages trust, causes financial loss, disrupts access to services, and harms the reputation of individuals and the nation.
Students were advised to promote digital responsibility, avoid cybercrime, and educate others about its dangers, regardless of economic pressure or peer influence.
The excursion coordinator, Mr. Enam P. Abalis, expressed appreciation to the EFCC for hosting the students and providing awareness on integrity and cybercrime prevention.
