#On The Alleged Forgery of Buhari’s Signature

Nigeria and Nigerians are funny. The country is funny and the people are funny. Nothing best confirms this view today than the story making the rounds that some thieves used a forgery of Buhari’s signature to steal $6.2 million US from the Central Bank of Nigeria.

Boss Mustspha, the erstwhile Secretary to the Government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (2017 – 2023) went to court to testify that some thieves went to the Central Bank of Nigeria with a forged signature of Buhari and carted away $6.2 million US. In broad daylight. And – boy oh boy – Nigerians believe the nonsense. No questions asked. No expressions of doubt. Just believe.

Is that the way the CBN operates? No paper trail of the approval process? No memo from State House? Nothing? Someone just shows up at the CBN. The someone presents a letter to the CBN leadership purportedly from Buhari. The CBN does not call the Chief of Staff to the President. No diligence. It just opens the vault and the Someone carts away $6.2 million. Does this sound believable? Perhaps in a country like Nigeria, it sounds believable and is believable.

Buhari is alive. He has not gone to court to testify under oath that the signature on that document is not his. That he never approved the amount. The government has not invited any forensic experts and signature experts to analyze the signature. No one has thought it fit to show the Nigerian people Buhari’s true signature to compare against the forgery. Nothing!

Yet Nigerians believe and accept Boss Mustspha’s fat or tall tale of a forgery. The Nigerian Police have reached out to Interpol for help. Three names are circulating in the media. There are no photographs accompanying the names. There are no investigations to determine whether the names are real.

But Nigerians believe! Goodness. What manner or species of human beings are these Nigerians – educated and uneducated? What kind of God created them? Why are they incapable of asking questions? Why are they not sufficiently curious? Why?

Their newspapers report great suffering across the land. There are videos on social media documenting their lamentation. I do not care. I have no ears to hear them. I am completely without sympathy for anyone in Nigeria. Suffer. It is your lot. It is your choice. Don’t complain because no one is ready to hear your complaints. A people get the government that they deserve.
