Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, former Governor of Kano State and leader of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has dismissed allegations suggesting that he is secretly supporting President Bola Ahmed Tinubu ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
Kwankwaso made the clarification during an interview on Global TV, where he said the claims being circulated against him were false and part of a pattern of political misinformation that has followed him since his time in the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP).
The allegations were earlier raised by Sanusi Bature, spokesperson to Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf, who accused Kwankwaso of indirectly backing Tinubu’s re-election bid and also claimed he had recently attempted to secure a private meeting with the president, which reportedly did not take place.
Responding to the accusations, Kwankwaso strongly denied any form of alliance with the president, stressing that he and his political movement are focused solely on their own agenda.
He also noted that while he maintains a personal relationship with Tinubu, their political paths remain separate, adding that each politician is pursuing independent ideological goals.
Kwankwaso further argued that the president may not be fully aware of the country’s current challenges, suggesting that individuals within his inner circle could be filtering information and shaping his perception of national issues.
He added that political attention in the ruling party appears to be focused on attracting governors into its fold, which he said reflects APC’s growing numerical advantage.
On emerging political alignments, Kwankwaso revealed that discussions within a broader opposition coalition involving Peter Obi were based on strategic consultations aimed at presenting a strong alternative ahead of the 2027 elections. He stated that the group still has ample time to engage Nigerians and clarify ongoing rumours.
According to him, the coalition is committed to offering credible leadership and addressing Nigeria’s current governance challenges through a unified front.
