OPEC Secretary General, Haitham Al-Ghais, has called on African nations to ramp up investments in their oil and gas sector to unlock the continent’s vast reserves of over 120 billion barrels. Speaking at the Nigeria International Energy Summit (NIES) 2025 in Abuja, Al-Ghais emphasized Africa’s crucial role in the global energy market, urging leaders to reject external pressures and policies that could hinder development.
He cautioned against what he described as “misguided policy recommendations” and “overly ambitious” global energy targets, warning that arbitrary climate policies could stifle Africa’s energy growth. Instead, he advocated for a balanced approach that ensures energy security, economic development, and increased access to power across the continent.
His remarks come amid ongoing debates on energy transition, with some African policymakers pushing for a “just energy transition” that allows countries to develop their fossil fuel resources while advancing economic goals.
