OUTRAGE OVER ISRAELI SOLDIER’S VANDALISM OF JESUS STATUE IN LEBANON

An image circulating online showing an Israeli soldier allegedly striking a statue of Jesus with a sledgehammer in southern Lebanon has triggered widespread criticism and diplomatic reactions.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described the incident as “stunned and saddened,” while Foreign Minister Gideon Saar issued an apology, saying regret was expressed to Christians whose feelings were hurt.

Local residents in the Lebanese village of Debel said the statue, which stood on a crucifix outside a private home, was damaged in the incident. The village is among the areas where some civilians have remained amid ongoing tensions linked to the Israel–Hezbollah conflict.
A local church leader condemned the act, describing it as disrespectful to religious symbols and inconsistent with basic human dignity. He also alleged that similar incidents had occurred previously in the area.

The Israeli military confirmed the authenticity of the circulating image and said it treats the matter seriously. It stated that the soldier’s conduct does not align with expected military values and that disciplinary measures would be taken. The military also said efforts were underway to work with the Christian community to restore the damaged statue.
The incident comes against the backdrop of continued Israeli military presence in parts of southern Lebanon following a US-brokered ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah. Despite the truce, both sides have continued to accuse each other of violations.

The controversy has drawn international reactions, including calls from some US political figures for accountability and swift disciplinary action.
Separately, wider tensions in the region have also raised concerns about rising religious sensitivity, with reports highlighting increased strain on interfaith relations.
