OYO SCHOOL ABDUCTION: TERRORISTS SLASH DEMANDS AS TROOPS TIGHTEN NOOSE AROUND HIDEOUTS

Security forces are reportedly intensifying efforts to rescue schoolchildren and teachers abducted in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State, following indications that troops have restricted key escape routes around the Old Oyo National Park where the victims are believed to be held.

The victims were kidnapped on May 15, 2026, when armed attackers invaded three schools in the Ahoro-Esinle, Yawota, and Alawusa communities, sparking widespread concern among residents and families.

According to security sources, military personnel have strengthened operations around the forest corridor, blocking major routes and limiting the movement of the abductors. The development is said to have placed the kidnappers under increasing pressure as security forces continue to narrow their operational space.

Intelligence reports suggest the armed group may now be struggling to maintain its initial demands due to the growing security clampdown. Sources indicated that some of the earlier conditions presented by the kidnappers have reportedly been dropped, with negotiations now focused mainly on ransom demands.

The abductors had initially demanded the release of detained terrorist suspects, ransom payments, the provision of vehicles, and other conditions. However, security officials believe the group’s position has weakened as rescue operations intensify.

Authorities are also investigating reports that one of the abducted teachers was killed, an action believed to have been intended to pressure negotiators and heighten fear among affected families.

Further findings indicate that the suspected leader of the gang is allegedly from the Oriire area and is believed to have later become involved with extremist networks after undergoing radicalisation.

The affected communities are located near strategic border corridors and heavily forested areas, making security operations more challenging due to difficult terrain and limited communication access.

Security experts have noted that increased military offensives against terrorist and criminal groups across the country may be forcing some elements to relocate and target vulnerable rural communities and schools.

Recent counter-terrorism operations have reportedly recorded successes against several extremist groups, leading to the arrest and elimination of numerous high-profile operatives.

Despite the challenges, security agencies have expressed confidence that ongoing operations will lead to positive outcomes, assuring residents that efforts to secure the safe release of the abducted children and teachers remain a top priority.
