PANIC AS NEW TERRORIST GROUP ‘SAI MALLAM’ EMERGES IN KEBBI

The Kebbi State Government has expressed concern over the growing activities of a newly identified extremist group known as the “Sai Mallam” sect, which is reportedly gaining ground in some parts of the state, especially in Argungu Local Government Area.

The warning was issued by the state’s Security Adviser, retired Colonel Danladi Ribah, during a security stakeholders’ meeting attended by the Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of the North-West zone, Suleiman Mohammed Abdul, in Birnin Kebbi.

Ribah revealed that security agencies first noticed the group’s activities in Zuru, where only a few members were identified. However, he noted that the sect’s presence has since increased significantly in Argungu.

He explained that the group was initially discovered in Sokoto State, where authorities successfully curtailed its operations before it began appearing in neighboring areas.

The security adviser assured residents that the state government is actively collaborating with security agencies to contain the threat and prevent the group from expanding its influence across the state.

According to him, Governor Nasir Idris has continued to provide substantial support to security agencies through funding, equipment and logistics to strengthen efforts against bandits and other criminal groups operating within and around Kebbi State.

Ribah further disclosed that members of the Lakurawa group gain entry into Kebbi through routes linked to Sokoto State and the Niger Republic, while the Mamudawa group reportedly enters through neighboring Kwara and Niger states.

He also noted that many bandit attacks affecting communities in Kebbi are often launched from hideouts located in nearby Zamfara State.

Reaffirming the government’s commitment to public safety, Ribah stated that authorities remain vigilant and are taking necessary measures to protect lives and property across the state.

Meanwhile, the District Head of Ambursa, Alhaji Isa Haruna Rasheed, urged the government to increase financial support for police formations, stressing that improved funding would enhance security operations and boost the welfare of officers serving in the state.
