Police Invite AIG, VeryDarkMan Over Allegations, Say Court Will Decide Ongoing Case
The Nigeria Police Force has reaffirmed its commitment to due process, professionalism and the rule of law following the controversy involving social media influencer Martins Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan, and the Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of Zone 2, Lagos, AIG Moshood Jimoh.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Ani Iniedu, said the criminal case referenced by VeryDarkMan had already been investigated and taken to court based on legal advice from the Directorate of Public Prosecutions.
The police said the matter is now before a court of competent jurisdiction and that its outcome would be determined through the judicial process.
According to the statement, the Force would not conduct the case through the media or allow public opinion to influence the legal proceedings.
The police also disclosed that the Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of the Force Criminal Investigation Department had invited AIG Jimoh for questioning over the allegations made against him.
It further revealed that the Force CID in Abuja issued a formal invitation to VeryDarkMan on July 30, 2026, asking him to appear before investigators and provide evidence to support the claims he made publicly.
The Force said the decision reflects its commitment to investigating every credible allegation, regardless of the rank of the officer involved or the status of the complainant.
It noted that disciplinary actions within the Nigeria Police Force are guided by the Constitution, the Police Act 2020, Police Regulations, Force Orders and other established administrative procedures.
While acknowledging the constitutional right of Nigerians to express their views and criticise public institutions, the police cautioned against making unverified allegations.
The statement stressed that freedom of expression does not include defamation or attempts to pressure the police into taking disciplinary action through public campaigns.
It added that any officer found guilty after investigation would face the appropriate sanctions in line with the law, while individuals who make false allegations intended to damage the reputation of officers or the institution could also face legal consequences.
The Force urged VeryDarkMan to honour the invitation from the Force CID and allow both the administrative investigation and the ongoing court proceedings to run their course.
The police also reaffirmed that no officer is above the law and pledged to continue promoting transparency, accountability and professionalism in carrying out its constitutional responsibilities.
