Police arrest suspected drug dealer, six others in Anambra, recover firearms
The Anambra State Police Command has arrested a suspected female drug dealer and six other suspects during separate operations targeting criminal hideouts across the state.
The operations were carried out in line with the directives of the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, and the command’s strategy to tackle violent crimes, cultism and illicit drug activities.
The police spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, disclosed this on Friday.
According to Ikenga, operatives of the Violent Crime Response Unit arrested 65-year-old Ifeanyi Ogbuagbo at Umudioka on the evening of August 13, 2026, following credible intelligence.
A search of his residence reportedly led to the recovery of an army uniform and spent ammunition shells concealed in a black polythene bag.
The police said preliminary investigations indicated that Ogbuagbo was allegedly linked to a criminal group advocating self-government.
He was subsequently taken into custody for further investigation, while detectives continued efforts to establish the circumstances surrounding the recovered items and his alleged activities.
Six others arrested
On the same evening, police operatives raided a suspected criminal hideout in Ekwulobia, Aguata Local Government Area, where six additional suspects were arrested.
They were identified as Onyedika Moses, 36; Iruka Nwaonu, 30; Joseph Nwankwo, 36; Chukwujekwu Nwoso, 32; Akanimo Orok, 40; and Chisom Okafor, 25.
The police said Okafor was the only female among the six suspects.
During the operation, officers recovered a quantity of dried weeds suspected to be Cannabis sativa, alongside other substances suspected to be illicit drugs.
The Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, Nnanna Ama, reportedly directed officers to intensify raids on criminal hideouts, drug-selling points and other locations identified as centres of criminal activity.
He also reaffirmed the command’s commitment to intelligence-led operations, strategic patrols and coordinated raids aimed at dismantling criminal networks across the state.
Police recover fabricated pistols and cult items
In a separate operation, police operatives also recovered two fabricated pistols and three caps bearing inscriptions linked to the Vikings Confraternity from an abandoned motorcycle in Awka North Local Government Area.
Ikenga said the items were recovered during a routine patrol along the Isuaniocha Bridge on August 13.
According to him, officers noticed two men riding a black Sanyang motorcycle without a registration number.
The men reportedly became suspicious upon sighting the police and abruptly turned the motorcycle around in an attempt to evade the officers.
The police gave chase, but the suspects eventually fell from the motorcycle and abandoned it along with two slippers and a bag before escaping into a nearby bush.
A search of the abandoned bag allegedly uncovered the two fabricated pistols and the three cult-branded caps.
The police said efforts were ongoing to identify and apprehend the fleeing suspects and determine their affiliations and the circumstances surrounding the possession of the recovered firearms.
The Anambra Police Command said it would sustain patrols, intelligence gathering and proactive operations across the state as part of efforts to disrupt criminal activities and improve public safety.
