Moshood Abiola National Stadium Closed Over Security Concerns
The Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja has been temporarily closed following a directive from security authorities.
The closure was announced in a security notice issued by the Stadium Management and the Abuja Security Command to users of the facility.
According to the notice, all entrances to the stadium were shut from Monday night, August 3, 2026, and will remain closed until further instructions are received from the Nigeria Police Headquarters.
Authorities also directed everyone still inside the stadium to leave the premises peacefully, warning that security personnel had been deployed to enforce the directive and maintain public safety.
“Security personnel have been deployed to enforce this measure and ensure public safety,” the notice stated.
Members of the public were urged to remain calm, obey instructions from security officials and avoid gathering around the stadium gates.
The management said further information on the reopening of the facility would be communicated once new directives are issued by the Police Headquarters.
The temporary shutdown affects all users of the stadium, including individuals and groups scheduled to use the pitch and other facilities.
Located along Constitution Avenue in Kukwaba, Abuja, the Moshood Abiola National Stadium is one of Nigeria’s largest sporting facilities, with a seating capacity of 60,491.
Completed in 2003, the stadium hosts major sporting events, national celebrations and other public activities. It was renamed in 2019 in honour of the late businessman and politician, Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola.
No date has been announced for the reopening of the stadium, as access remains suspended pending further security directives.
