Umrah in Ramadhan is equal to Hajj

Narrated Ibn Abbas:

The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “ Verily, the Umrah pilgrimage during Ramadhan is equal to Hajj.”

Sahih al-Bukhari and Muslim

NOTES 📝

1. In a fuller version, Ibn ‘Abbas narrated that: The Messenger of Allaah ﷺ said to a woman from among the Ansaar – Ibn ‘Abbas mentioned her name but I forgot it – “What kept you from performing Hajj with us?” She said: We only have two camels and the father of her son and her son had gone for Hajj on one camel, and he left us the other camel so that we could carry water on it. He said: “When Ramadhan comes, go for ‘Umrah, for ‘Umrah in (that month) is equivalent to Hajj.”

2. The meaning of the hadith is that performing ‘Umrah in the month of Ramadhan merits a reward equal to that of performing a voluntary Hajj or performing Hajj in the company of the Prophet ﷺ based on other narrations.

3. “This means in regards to merit and reward and it does not mean it is equivalent to it and replaces it such that he does not have to perform Hajj. No, rather he (i.e. a Muslim) still must perform the Hajj, the Hajj of Islam (the obligatory Hajj) even if he makes ‘Umrah in Ramadhan according to all of the scholars. Thus, with ‘Umrah in Ramadhan, the merit of Hajj is attained from the aspect of reward and excellence, but it does not compensate for the Hajj of Islam.” – Shaykh Ibn Baaz

O Allah, aid us in becoming righteous, grant us Taqwa so that we may do abundant good deeds during the month of Ramadhan and beyond. O Allah, You are Forgiving. You love to forgive, so forgive us … Ãmeen.
