Lawmakers were notified of the special session through an official notice issued by the Acting Clerk of the House, Ibrahim Sidi. The meeting was convened in line with the provisions of the House Standing Orders.

The proposed amendment seeks to move the deadline for executing the capital aspect of the 2025 budget from June 30, 2026, to September 30, 2026.

If approved, the extension will allow Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) additional time to complete ongoing infrastructure projects and other development programmes funded under the 2025 budget.

The notice urged all members of the House to give priority to the sitting due to the importance of the legislation under consideration.

The bill, titled the Appropriation (Repeal and Enactment) Act, 2025 (Amendment) (No. 2) Bill, 2026, is expected to support the effective utilization of allocated funds and improve the completion rate of government-funded projects nationwide.

Should the proposal receive approval from both chambers of the National Assembly and subsequently obtain presidential assent, the validity of the capital expenditure component of the 2025 budget will be extended until the end of September 2026.

The move underscores ongoing efforts by lawmakers to ensure critical projects are completed and that budgeted resources are fully utilized for national development.
