Traditional rulers in Rivers State have voiced strong support for the existing pipeline surveillance framework in the Niger Delta, urging the Federal Government to resist calls for decentralisation of the program.

Speaking at a press briefing in Port Harcourt, the monarchs reviewed the performance of the surveillance contract introduced in 2022 to curb crude oil theft and vandalism. They commended the arrangement, managed by Tantita Security Services Nigeria Limited, for improving security and fostering stability across oil-bearing communities.

HRM Bright Fiboinumama, Traditional Ruler of Abuloma, said, “As traditional rulers in Rivers State, we oppose the decentralisation of the pipeline surveillance contract handled by Tantita Security Services Limited. Doing so could disrupt the security gains currently enjoyed by our communities.” He also thanked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for entrusting High Chief Government Oweizide Ekpemupolo, also known as Tompolo, with this responsibility.

Similarly, Kroma Eleki-Sara XIV, Amanyanabo of Kula Kingdom, highlighted the benefits of the current system, noting improved water conditions, reduced bunkering, and better fishing opportunities for local communities.
The rulers warned that fragmenting the contract could weaken coordination, reduce efficiency, and potentially reverse the progress made in curbing oil theft and environmental degradation. Stephen Tobins, Amanyanabo of Bukuma, emphasised that consistency and structure have been central to the success achieved so far.

Rather than decentralising, the monarchs called for strengthening the existing framework through enhanced oversight and sustained collaboration with host communities to protect critical oil infrastructure, support environmental preservation, and maintain regional stability.

As discussions continue, the Federal Government faces a choice between maintaining the centralised model, which stakeholders argue is working effectively, or pursuing decentralisation to broaden participation. For now, Rivers State traditional leaders are making it clear that continuity and stability remain their priority in pipeline security.
