The announcement was made in a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Gboyega Akosile.

Governor Sanwo-Olu explained that the proposed extension is part of a broader integrated transport strategy that combines rail, road, and water systems to ease mobility across Lagos and surrounding areas.

He noted that the Red Line was designed as a high-capacity rail corridor to serve both intra-city commuters and the large number of people travelling daily between Lagos and nearby Ogun communities.

According to him, the Red Line is expected to be more robust than the Blue Line, with the capacity to run longer train sets and transport up to 500,000 passengers daily when fully operational.

He added that ongoing discussions aim to extend the rail line further into Ogun State to improve accessibility and strengthen economic ties between both states.

The governor also highlighted that Lagos is expanding its rail infrastructure, including the addition of new rolling stock to increase passenger capacity on the Red Line corridor.

He further noted that the rail system will be integrated with other transport initiatives, including water transport projects, to create a more efficient and connected mobility network.

The Red Line rail project is part of the Lagos Strategic Transport Master Plan, which envisions a multi-line rail system across the state, with both the Red and Blue Lines already in operation in their initial phases.
