Senegal’s President, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, has been elected Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), taking over from Sierra Leone’s President, Julius Maada Bio.
Faye was elected during the 69th Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government held in Freetown, Sierra Leone, where regional leaders met to discuss major political, economic and security issues affecting West Africa.
At the same summit, Biram Diop was appointed as the new President of the ECOWAS Commission, succeeding Dr. Omar Touray.
The meeting focused on strengthening regional integration, improving cooperation among member states and promoting unity across the West African region.
Reacting to his election, Faye expressed gratitude for the confidence reposed in Senegal by fellow leaders, describing the appointment as a responsibility he accepts with humility.
He also congratulated Biram Diop on his appointment as President of the ECOWAS Commission and pledged his full support as the regional body pursues its objectives.
Faye called for a more united and reconciled West Africa, reaffirming his commitment to advancing the goals of the regional bloc.
His emergence comes at a time when ECOWAS continues to confront challenges including terrorism, political instability, economic integration and evolving relations with Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger following their withdrawal from the organisation.
