SERAP, NIGERIAN GUILD OF EDITORS TO TINUBU: END IMPUNITY, PROTECT JOURNALISTS NOW

Human rights organisations and media professionals have urged the administration of President Bola Tinubu, state governors, and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory to take urgent measures to protect journalists, defend press freedom, and tackle the growing insecurity affecting several northern states in Nigeria.

The call was made during activities marking World Press Freedom Day, where concerns were raised over increasing killings, kidnappings, displacement, sexual violence, and destruction of communities in states such as Benue, Borno, Plateau, Sokoto, and Kwara.

Participants at the conference stressed that protecting journalists and ensuring free access to information are essential for democracy, peace, and national stability. They warned that continued attacks on media professionals, alongside insecurity and human rights abuses, are weakening public trust and encouraging impunity across affected regions.

The groups noted that many rural communities have suffered repeated attacks, leaving thousands dead and millions displaced, with women and children among the worst affected. They argued that authorities have failed to adequately prevent violence, investigate crimes, and prosecute those responsible.

They also called on the Federal Government to guarantee freedom of expression, improve transparency in security operations, and establish stronger accountability measures for human rights violations. Recommendations included independent investigations, compensation for victims, public reporting systems on insecurity, and collaboration with international human rights bodies.

Senior lawyer Femi Falana stated that impunity continues to fuel violence in many northern communities, warning that any government unable to protect its citizens risks losing public confidence. He added that journalists play a vital role in exposing abuse, preventing violence, and strengthening democracy.

The event attracted editors, broadcasters, civil society leaders, and media executives from several Nigerian media organisations and advocacy groups.
