#Silent Respect: Super Eagles Remember Supporters Lost in South Africa Battle

The Super Eagles of Nigeria have paid tribute to those who lost their lives during Wednesday’s intense Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) semi-final, marked by a dramatic penalty shootout victory over South Africa.

Five supporters tragically lost their lives as Nigeria secured a hard-fought victory, earning their spot in the final. Following a 1-1 stalemate in regulation and extra time, the Super Eagles emerged triumphant with a 4-2 penalty victory.

Among those who passed away during the game were former House of Representatives member Cairo Ojougboh, Igbo businessman High Chief Osondu Nwoye based in Ivory Coast, deputy bursar of Kwara State University Ayuba Abdullahi, and 43-year-old Ogun resident Mikail Osundiji.

Led by captain Ahmed Musa, the team observed a minute of silence in honor of the deceased. Musa expressed determination to win the AFCON trophy as a tribute to those who lost their lives, stating, “On Sunday, we are going to lift that trophy for them.”

A video capturing the poignant moment of remembrance was shared on Instagram on Friday morning.

In their mourning message via social media, the Super Eagles expressed the tragic loss of passionate supporters who, caught up in the excitement of the Nigeria vs South Africa match, were unaware of the looming danger.

Despite the somber mood, the Super Eagles now shift their focus to the final against host nation Cote d’Ivoire on Sunday.

They aim to honor the memory of their fallen fans by lifting the AFCON trophy at the Stade Olympique Alassane Ouattara in Ebimpe.
