The Sokoto State Government is taking steps to improve public transportation through the expansion of its transport fleet and the conversion of vehicles to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), as part of efforts to provide more efficient and affordable mass transit services.
The initiative is aimed at improving mobility for residents, reducing transportation costs and strengthening the state’s public transport system. The adoption of CNG is also expected to reduce dependence on petrol and help lower operating expenses for transport operators.

Expanding the fleet is expected to increase the availability of buses and other mass transit vehicles, making it easier for commuters to travel between communities and major commercial centres across the state.
The transition to CNG-powered vehicles reflects a broader shift towards alternative energy sources in Nigeria’s transportation sector, particularly as operators continue to face pressure from rising fuel prices.

For Sokoto, the combination of fleet expansion and fuel conversion could help improve service delivery, reduce the financial burden on transport providers and support more sustainable urban mobility.

The success of the programme will depend on the availability of adequate CNG refuelling facilities, proper vehicle maintenance and effective management of the expanded fleet.
The state’s transport modernisation efforts form part of wider attempts to improve public services and make mass transit more accessible to residents.
