A video obtained by Headlinenews.news, purportedly showing soldiers butchering a hippopotamus after it was killed during field operations, has renewed concerns over the protection of Nigeria’s diminishing wildlife.

The National Patriots urged the Nigerian Armed Forces to reinforce operational guidelines discouraging the unnecessary killing of protected wildlife. The group stressed that ammunition supplied for counterterrorism and security operations should remain dedicated to confronting armed threats rather than being used against protected wildlife except where human life is in immediate danger.
