SOUTH WEST YOUTH ALLIANCE DEFENDS AIG JIMOH, DEMANDS RETRACTION OVER ALLEGED COURT SERVICE EVASION CLAIMS

The South West Youth Alliance (SWYA) has denied claims that Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Olohundare Jimoh, tried to avoid receiving court documents in a fundamental rights case initiated by activist Taiwo Hassan, popularly known as “Soweto.”

In a statement released on Wednesday by its spokesperson, Adenike Ajanlekoko, the group described the allegations as inaccurate and misleading, insisting that they were intended to tarnish the image of the senior police officer.

The alliance said there was no effort by AIG Jimoh to evade service of court papers in the suit, which involves allegations of torture, assault and infringement of constitutional rights linked to a protest in Lagos.

According to the group, counsel representing Taiwo Hassan informed the court that the necessary legal documents had already been served on the legal representatives of AIG Jimoh. The claimant’s lawyer also disclosed that an additional motion had been filed before the court.

SWYA stated that these developments contradicted allegations that the police chief had been making attempts to avoid service of court processes.

The group further rejected claims that court bailiffs faced obstruction while trying to serve the AIG at the Zone 2 Police Command Headquarters, arguing that such assertions lacked credible evidence presented before the court.

Calling for accountability, the alliance urged those behind the allegations to withdraw the claims and publicly apologise to AIG Jimoh over what it described as damage to his reputation.

The organisation also appealed to civil society groups and advocacy bodies to act responsibly when making public comments on matters currently before the courts.

Reaffirming its confidence in the Nigeria Police Force, the alliance said the institution remains committed to professionalism, transparency and accountability.

The matter has been adjourned until October 28, 2026, for further hearing, with the South West Youth Alliance pledging to continue monitoring the case and challenge what it considers misinformation surrounding the proceedings.
