SPAIN TO URGE EU TO SUSPEND ASSOCIATION AGREEMENT WITH ISRAEL

Spain is set to push for a major shift in European Union policy toward Israel, as Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez announced plans to formally propose suspending the EU–Israel association agreement.

Speaking at a political rally in Andalusia, Sánchez revealed that his government will present the proposal, arguing that Israel’s actions amount to violations of international law and are incompatible with maintaining a formal partnership with the European Union. The agreement, which has been in force since 2000, governs political and economic cooperation between both sides.

Spain’s stance reflects a steady escalation in its criticism of Israel over the past year. Madrid has increasingly positioned itself among the most vocal critics within the EU, particularly over Israel’s military operations in Gaza and the broader Middle East.

Tensions between the two countries have already deepened. In March 2026, Spain ended the appointment of its ambassador to Israel, a move that underscored the worsening diplomatic relationship. The decision was formalized through an official directive issued after deliberations by the Spanish Council of Ministers.

Beyond Gaza, Spain has also condemned the wider regional conflict involving Israel and Iran. Sánchez described recent joint military actions involving Israel and the United States as unjustifiable, emphasizing that Spain opposes any further escalation.

Reinforcing this position, the Spanish government has rejected the use of its joint military bases by the United States for operations against Iran, distancing itself from the conflict and maintaining a firm anti-war stance.
