STRIKE SHOWDOWN: FG MEETS SSANU, NASU, NAAT AHEAD OF APRIL 30 DEADLINE

The Federal Government has called for an emergency meeting with non-teaching staff unions in Nigeria’s university system in a bid to prevent an impending industrial action.

The meeting is set to hold on Wednesday at the Conference Hall of the Federal Ministry of Education within the Federal Secretariat in Abuja.

This development follows a growing standoff between the government and university-based unions, including the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), over the ongoing renegotiation of welfare and salary conditions.

SSANU had issued a deadline of April 30, 2026, for the conclusion of the renegotiation process and has firmly rejected the government’s proposed 30 percent salary increase, describing it as inadequate and not arising from proper collective bargaining.

Alongside SSANU, other unions such as the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) and the National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT) are also expected to attend the meeting.

Union representatives maintain that their position remains unchanged, insisting that unless a satisfactory agreement is reached and signed before the deadline, they will proceed with a total and indefinite strike action.

They also emphasized that the proposed salary adjustment falls short of their expectations and does not reflect a genuine negotiation outcome.
