#Surviving Blood Clots: Mr. Ibu’s Tragic Loss Spurs Charles Awuzie’s Advocacy for Awareness.

Mr. Ibu passed away due to blood clots in his leg, a condition that nearly claimed my life as well.

I still harbor a clot in my left leg. Shockingly, 200,000 Nigerians succumb to blood clots annually. It’s imperative to recognize the symptoms; my life was spared only through timely medical intervention.

Three years ago, I endured undiagnosed deep vein thrombosis (DVT) for months. Subsequently, it migrated to my lungs, causing a life-threatening pulmonary embolism. Breathing became excruciating, mobility nearly impossible, and excruciating pain confined me to bed. Despite numerous medical tests, my condition remained undetected until the day I nearly ceased breathing.

Upon visiting my general practitioner, a D-dimer blood test was immediately ordered. This crucial test detects blood clotting issues by measuring D-dimer levels. Upon receiving a positive result, I was swiftly hospitalized, as my physician warned of imminent danger.

Amidst the urgency, I felt compelled to bid farewell to my loved ones. After gathering essentials, I drove myself to the hospital. Admittance was delayed due to COVID restrictions, exacerbating my deteriorating condition. Finally, upon admission, I was administered CLEXANE as my oxygen levels plummeted.

A subsequent CT scan confirmed bilateral massive pulmonary embolism, a potentially fatal condition. My physician warned that without prompt hospitalization, my fate would have been sealed within days.

During my harrowing 10-day hospitalization, I confronted mortality head-on, reaching out to loved ones and preparing for the worst. Thanks to expert medical care and unwavering faith, I emerged victorious, albeit with a newfound mission to raise awareness about blood clots.

Long periods of inactivity, such as during flights or extended work hours, elevate the risk of clot formation. Individuals with high blood pressure or undergoing cancer treatment face heightened risks. Genetic clotting disorders also warrant investigation, especially if familial history suggests predisposition.

Moreover, misattributing medical conditions to spiritual causes can be fatal. Many Nigerians perish needlessly due to misinformation or lack of access to essential medical services.
