Tanzania’s President Samia Suluhu Hassan loses husband Hafidh Ameir Hassan
Hafidh Ameir Hassan, the husband of Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan, has died while receiving medical treatment in Zanzibar.

Tanzania’s Vice President, Deogratius Ndejembi, announced his death on Monday, September 7, 2026, stating that Hafidh passed away at about 8:00 a.m. at Emilio Mzena Memorial Hospital.
He had reportedly been receiving treatment for a heart condition before his death. Funeral arrangements are underway in Kizimkazi, Zanzibar, which is the family’s native area.

Hafidh became Tanzania’s first First Gentleman in 2021 after his wife assumed the presidency following the death of President John Magufuli. He largely maintained a low public profile during his time in the position.

Following the announcement, condolences have been extended to President Samia, her family and the people of Tanzania by several African leaders, including Kenyan President William Ruto and African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf.
