Governor Agbu Kefas of Taraba State has officially announced his intention to leave the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The declaration came during a meeting with APC youth stakeholders on Wednesday at T.Y. Danjuma House in Asokoro, Abuja, according to a statement by Rikwense Muri, the publicity secretary of the Taraba APC Youth Vanguard.

Confirming the development, Josiah Kente, the governor’s Special Adviser on Political Matters, said the move followed wide consultations to ensure a smooth transition.
Governor Kefas reportedly told APC stakeholders that Taraba “could no longer afford to remain isolated from the mainstream of national politics,” adding that his defection was driven by a desire for development, improved security, and greater federal presence in the state.
“I am guided by the need to put Taraba first,” he said. “Our state must take its rightful place in national development, and that can only happen when we work hand in hand with the centre.”
APC youth leaders hailed the move as a “masterstroke” that would strengthen Taraba’s relationship with the federal government and drive progress.
However, some PDP stakeholders in the state expressed disappointment, describing the governor’s decision as “a setback for internal democracy.”
Governor Kefas, a retired Army intelligence officer, was elected governor in 2023 under the PDP platform.
