Taraba State Governor, Agbu Kefas, has signed three executive orders aimed at strengthening security, protecting communities and addressing social challenges across the state.
The orders focus on the prohibition of political thuggery, protection of host mining communities, and the fight against drug abuse, including the enforcement of existing laws against related offences.
Speaking shortly after signing the executive orders, Kefas said the measures were necessary to protect the lives, safety and future of the people of Taraba State.
On drug abuse, the governor expressed concern over the increasing spread of substance abuse, particularly among young people, noting that some schools and public spaces had become places where illicit substances were being consumed.
He said the new order would support the work of drug enforcement agencies and emphasised that tackling the problem required cooperation between government authorities, security agencies, parents, teachers, traditional rulers and communities.
Kefas warned that his administration would not allow drug abuse to destroy the future of Taraba youths, adding that actions would be taken within the limits of the Constitution while respecting citizens’ rights.
He urged families, community leaders and relevant institutions to work together to protect young people from the dangers of substance abuse.
Addressing the issue of political thuggery, the governor said the order was introduced ahead of the coming political campaigns to prevent activities that could threaten the peace and stability of the state.
He recalled the efforts of his administration in restoring security across Taraba and vowed that no individual or group would be allowed to disrupt public order.
On illegal mining, Kefas said the executive order was aimed at ensuring that mining activities are properly regulated while safeguarding the interests and welfare of host communities.
He added that the state government would collaborate with the Federal Government and the Ministry of Solid Minerals Development to promote responsible mining practices in line with the law.
The Chairman of the Taraba State Youth Development Agency, Gara Soyonga, and the State Commissioner of Police, Sebastian Dongshal, both described the governor’s action as timely, saying it would help prevent security challenges ahead of future political activities and elections.
