The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has partnered with the Federal Ministry of Transportation to connect the Kano Railway Station and other railway facilities to the national electricity grid as part of efforts to improve power supply for rail operations.
The partnership was announced during a stakeholders’ meeting held at TCN’s Kano Regional Headquarters, where participants discussed plans to provide a stable and reliable electricity supply to railway infrastructure under the Federal Ministry of Transportation.

Speaking at the meeting, the General Manager (Transmission), Kano Region, Engineer M.K. Bello, stressed the importance of continuous collaboration among all stakeholders, noting that early technical planning would ensure smooth implementation of the project and guarantee dependable electricity for railway operations.
Stakeholders reviewed the technical requirements for the proposed grid connection, implementation timelines, operational coordination, system reliability and the responsibilities of each organisation involved in the project.

They also discussed measures to ensure compliance with national grid standards, maintain network safety and achieve seamless integration into the country’s transmission network.
The participants reaffirmed their commitment to delivering the project in line with the Federal Government’s infrastructure development plans.
Once completed, the project is expected to improve the efficiency of railway services, strengthen transportation infrastructure and support the government’s efforts to provide reliable electricity to critical national facilities.

Representatives from the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO), the Federal Ministry of Transportation, Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO), Team Nigeria, and China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) attended the meeting.
Meanwhile, TCN’s Kano Region has also received two new 100MVA power transformers for installation at the ongoing 330/132/33kV transmission substation in Katsina State.

The transformers form part of TCN’s nationwide grid expansion programme aimed at improving electricity transmission and increasing power supply across the country.
According to TCN, the new transformers will play a key role in completing the Katsina substation project and will increase the region’s transmission capacity by an additional 160 megawatts once installed, tested and commissioned.
The company said the new substation will enhance the reliability, flexibility and efficiency of electricity transmission while increasing its ability to deliver bulk power to electricity distribution companies serving Katsina State and surrounding communities.
TCN added that the Katsina substation is one of several projects being implemented nationwide to modernise and strengthen Nigeria’s transmission infrastructure in response to the country’s growing electricity demand.
