TEGBE DIRECTS TCN, NISO, DISCOS TO ADDRESS POWER SUPPLY CHALLENGES

The Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, has directed the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) and electricity distribution companies (DisCos) to urgently address operational challenges responsible for the recent decline in electricity generation and supply across the country.

The directive comes amid growing complaints from Nigerians over reduced electricity supply in several parts of the country, including Lagos, Abuja, Ogun, Kwara and Oyo states.

In a statement issued by the ministry’s spokesperson, Adeola Adelabu, the minister said he was working closely with the relevant electricity sector agencies to ensure that normal power supply was restored as quickly as possible.

According to the statement, Tegbe has engaged the agencies to resolve the operational difficulties behind the recent disruptions, accelerate ongoing maintenance activities and ensure that members of the public receive regular updates on efforts to improve electricity supply.

The Ministry of Power acknowledged the inconvenience caused by the recent outages, particularly for households, businesses and public institutions in affected areas.

It noted that some of the affected locations had experienced noticeable improvements in electricity supply before the latest disruptions.

The ministry also said it understood the frustration of Nigerians who had begun to enjoy more stable electricity before the recent decline.

Preliminary assessments by the ministry indicated that the disruptions were not caused by any major or systemic failure of the national grid.

Instead, they were attributed to maintenance and operational challenges across parts of the electricity sector, alongside reduced power generation resulting from inadequate gas supply to thermal power stations and lower output from hydroelectric plants.

The ministry explained that reduced water inflows into reservoirs had affected the generation capacity of hydroelectric stations, while gas supply constraints had limited the ability of thermal power plants to operate at their available capacity.

It maintained that the identified challenges were being addressed through engagements with relevant stakeholders.

The ministry further reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to sustaining recent improvements in electricity supply and strengthening the reliability and quality of power nationwide.

It added that Nigerians deserved better electricity supply and assured citizens that the administration remained committed to delivering improvements in the sector.

Meanwhile, NISO had earlier identified inadequate gas supply to thermal generating stations and reduced output from hydroelectric power plants as major factors contributing to the decline in electricity generation.

The development has continued to affect electricity distribution across several networks, leaving consumers with fewer hours of power supply.
