TINUBU DARES OPPOSITION, VOWS TO STAY COURSE AS ZONING DEBATE DEEPENS

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s reported interest in the 2027 presidential race has sparked renewed political tension, as senior government figures and ruling party officials push back against his ambition while defending President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s leadership.

President Tinubu, speaking during a meeting with the Renewed Hope Ambassadors at the State House in Abuja, said he remained focused on governance and would not be distracted by criticism or political pressure. He emphasized that his administration’s reforms would continue despite opposition, adding that he was committed to economic recovery and national development.

He also stressed respect for the judiciary, urging compliance with court rulings regardless of political interests, while calling for national unity and shared purpose in building the country.

On economic challenges, Tinubu acknowledged difficulties facing citizens but maintained that ongoing reforms were necessary, assuring that his government would not retreat from difficult decisions.

Earlier, key officials within the All Progressives Congress (APC), including National Chairman Nentawe Yilwatda, expressed support for the President’s policies and highlighted ongoing infrastructure and development projects as signs of progress.

Governor Hope Uzodinma, speaking as coordinator of the Renewed Hope Ambassadors, called for stronger grassroots engagement to promote government policies, while Governor Uba Sani warned that poor communication of achievements could allow opposition narratives to dominate public perception.

Governor Inuwa Yahaya also urged closer coordination between state governments and political mobilizers to strengthen support for the administration’s agenda.

Meanwhile, the Presidency intensified its opposition to Atiku’s reported 2027 ambition. Presidential aide Bayo Onanuga argued that Nigeria’s informal zoning arrangement favours the South and insisted that Atiku’s candidacy would disrupt political balance and national consensus.

He maintained that the rotation principle has contributed to stability since 1999 and argued that President Tinubu should be allowed to complete his tenure following Buhari’s eight years in office.

Onanuga also criticized Atiku’s past presidential bids, claiming they had previously weakened opposition unity and led to electoral defeat.

FCT Minister Nyesom Wike also dismissed Atiku’s chances in 2027, describing him as a recurring opposition figure and insisting that the African Democratic Congress (ADC) lacks the structure to challenge the ruling APC. He expressed confidence that the APC would retain power in the next general election.

In response, Atiku’s camp accused the Presidency of attempting to suppress opposition voices and misrepresent democratic principles, arguing that zoning is a political convention rather than a constitutional rule. They maintained that Nigerians, not political elites, will ultimately decide the outcome of the 2027 election.

The growing exchanges highlight increasing political realignments and early positioning ahead of the 2027 general elections.
