US President Donald Trump has dismissed reports claiming the United States is running low on military munitions, insisting the country has more than enough weapons and warning that anyone responsible for leaking classified information could face lengthy prison sentences.
In a post on his Truth Social platform on Thursday, Trump said the US maintains a massive stockpile of munitions and continues to manufacture and receive more supplies as needed.
“The US has massive amounts of munitions, especially of certain types. In addition, large quantities are being produced and delivered whenever necessary,” he wrote.
His comments come as questions continue to grow over the state of America’s weapons stockpile, with the conflict involving Iran now entering its sixth month and no peace agreement in sight.
Reacting to reports of dwindling US supplies, Iran claimed its domestically produced weapons are sufficient to counter any threat.
Iran’s Defence Minister, Majid Ibn-e-Reza, said the country’s armed forces are fully equipped through support from its local defence industry.
“Every day, the enemy’s declining capabilities become more obvious. Our armed forces, backed by our defence industry, are prepared to respond to any threat,” he said.
He added that countries relying on imported military equipment would eventually realise that Iran’s homegrown technology is superior to any system in the region.
Reports by several US media outlets have suggested that the prolonged conflict has significantly reduced America’s stockpile of long-range precision missiles.
According to CBS News, citing unnamed officials, the US has used a substantial portion of its global inventory of long-range missiles during the conflict.
The Washington Post also reported that Trump recently questioned Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth over concerns about possible shortages, although the BBC said it had not independently confirmed the report.
Trump strongly rejected the reports, accusing those responsible for leaking the information of betraying the country.
“The leakers of these treasonous statements are being hunted down. Long-term jail sentences will be sought,” he said.
In another post, he described the Washington Post’s reporting as “treasonous” and defended Hegseth, saying he remained fully confident in the Defence Secretary’s leadership.
“I am extremely happy with the job Pete Hegseth is doing,” Trump wrote.
The exact size of the US missile stockpile remains classified.
However, estimates by the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), a US-based security think tank, suggest the country has significantly reduced inventories of key defence systems.
The organisation estimates that by the end of July, the US had between 759 and 827 Patriot missiles remaining, roughly one-third of the estimated 2,330 available before the conflict began.
CSIS also estimates that about 60 percent of America’s Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) interceptor missiles have been used.
Experts say replacing these advanced weapons is not a quick process because production takes years from funding approval to final delivery.
The US also continues to supply military aid to Ukraine, placing additional pressure on available inventories. President Trump recently acknowledged that sending more Patriot missiles to Ukraine would be “a big step,” although discussions are still ongoing.
Despite the concerns, the Trump administration insists there is no crisis.
Trump recently told the Wall Street Journal that the United States possesses far more munitions than any other country and far more than it currently needs.
Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth has also dismissed reports of shortages, describing them as a “manufactured story” while confirming that the Pentagon is accelerating weapons production to replenish stockpiles.
