TRUMP SUFFERS RARE HOUSE DEFEAT AS BIPARTISAN VOTE MOVES TO WITHDRAW TROOPS FROM IRAN CONFLICT

President Donald Trump has faced a rare political setback after the US House of Representatives voted to restrict his ability to conduct military operations against Iran without congressional approval.

Lawmakers passed the war powers resolution by a narrow 215–208 margin, with all Democrats supporting the measure and a small group of Republicans joining them in defiance of party leadership.

The resolution seeks to block the deployment of US forces in military action against Iran unless Congress grants explicit authorization. However, the measure is largely symbolic and does not carry the force of law.

Among the Republicans who broke ranks were Thomas Massie, Warren Davidson, Brian Fitzpatrick, and Tom Barrett, some of whom represent competitive districts or have previously criticized US military involvement in Iran.

Democratic leaders described the vote as a major political win, arguing it was necessary to assert congressional authority and prevent unilateral military escalation by the president. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries said the result demonstrated accountability and urged the Senate to take further action.

Republican lawmakers opposing the resolution dismissed it as politically motivated, arguing it could interfere with diplomatic efforts and ongoing attempts to de-escalate tensions with Iran. House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Brian Mast described the vote as unnecessary and purely symbolic.

While the Senate has previously considered similar proposals, no unified legislation has yet reached the president’s desk, leaving the issue unresolved at the federal level.

Public opinion data cited in reports suggests many Americans are skeptical of military action against Iran, although a majority believe the US maintains a strategic advantage in the region.

The vote highlights growing divisions within Congress over the president’s handling of foreign policy and ongoing military tensions in the Middle East.
