UGANDA MOURNS AS KING OYO, WORLD’S YOUNGEST MONARCH, DIES AT 34
King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, the traditional ruler of Uganda’s Tooro Kingdom and the world’s youngest reigning monarch recognised by Guinness World Records, has died at the age of 34.
The monarch died on Thursday, August 27, 2026, according to the Prime Minister of the Tooro Kingdom, Calvin Armstrong Rwomiire Akiiki. The cause of his death has not been disclosed.
King Oyo became monarch in 1995 at just three years old, following the death of his father. His early accession to the throne earned him international recognition as the youngest reigning monarch in the world.
Local reports said the king had been seriously ill and was receiving medical treatment in the United States before his death.
Confirming the news, Prime Minister Akiiki described the monarch’s death as an “immeasurable loss” to the royal family and the people of Tooro. He called on the people to remain united, calm and prayerful during the period of mourning.
Although King Oyo was never officially married, the Tooro Kingdom has assured its people that the royal succession remains secure.
According to the prime minister, the late king left behind a prince who is expected to succeed him. The identity of the heir will be formally announced at the appropriate time in line with the traditions and customs of the Tooro Kingdom.
