US WARNS VISA APPLICANTS AGAINST AI-EDITED PHOTOS, FILTERED IMAGES

The United States government has cautioned visa and passport applicants against submitting photographs altered with artificial intelligence or digital editing tools, warning that such images may cause delays or rejection during processing.

In a recent advisory, U.S. authorities stressed that passport photos must clearly reflect an applicant’s real and current appearance without the use of filters, enhancement apps or AI-generated modifications.

Officials explained that identity verification systems used at airports and border checkpoints depend on accurate facial recognition, making digitally manipulated images unacceptable for official travel documents.

Applicants were reminded that passport photos must be taken within the last six months, in colour, and with the individual facing the camera directly. The government also instructed applicants to remove eyeglasses and avoid tilting their heads while taking the photo.

The advisory further stated that photos should be captured against a plain white or off-white background free from shadows, textures or distracting lines.

Authorities noted that the increasing use of AI-powered editing applications and beauty filters has raised concerns globally over identity verification and document authenticity.

The U.S. government encouraged applicants to carefully review official passport photo guidelines before submitting their applications to avoid processing issues.
