When Armed Bandits Wave at Policemen: A Disturbing Portrait of Impunity and the Urgency of Proactive Policing.

The Dangerous Confidence of Bandits: Why Criminal Convoys Must Be Tracked, Hunted and Dismantled

Nothing illustrates the depth of Nigeria’s insecurity challenge more starkly than the growing audacity of armed bandits. A disturbing video circulating online reportedly shows hundreds of bandits riding in convoy on motorcycles, casually waving at policemen manning a security checkpoint as they drove past unhindered. It was not merely a display of arrogance; it was a disturbing portrait of impunity.

Understandably, six policemen confronting an estimated 300 armed men would have amounted to a suicide mission. No responsible commander would expect officers to engage overwhelmingly superior forces in a frontal battle. But modern policing is not only about firepower; it is about intelligence, communication and coordination.

The crucial question is not why the officers did not open fire. The real question is whether the sighting triggered immediate communication with higher command and neighbouring formations for tracking and interception.

Security checkpoints should no longer function merely as stop-and-search posts. They must evolve into intelligence nodes capable of transmitting information in real time. Every suspicious movement should generate alerts, trigger aerial surveillance where available, and activate coordinated responses involving the police, military and intelligence agencies.

Bandits moving in large convoys are not invisible. They have routes, fuel sources, informants and destinations. Once sighted, they should be tracked relentlessly. In counterinsurgency operations worldwide, from Colombia to Iraq, superior intelligence and coordinated pursuit have often achieved what direct confrontation could not.

Equally alarming is the psychological warfare employed by these criminals. Their ability to wave at security personnel sends a message of confidence and invincibility. Such dangerous perceptions must be shattered.

The Nigeria Police Force under IGP Kayode Egbetokun and the armed forces have made commendable gains against criminal networks, but incidents like these underscore the urgent need for proactive policing. Officers on security beats should receive clear operational directives on how to react when faced with overwhelming numbers. Survival, intelligence gathering and rapid reporting are sometimes more valuable than reckless engagements.

Technology, drones, communication equipment and integrated command structures must complement courage. The era of isolated checkpoints must give way to networked security architecture.

Bandits must never be allowed to believe they can openly mock the authority of the state.

The sight of armed criminals waving at policemen should not provoke despair. It should provoke reform.

In modern security operations, every sighting must become intelligence, every movement must become a trail, and every criminal convoy must know that once seen, it is already being hunted.

The National Patriots views the reported sight of armed bandits openly waving at policemen while riding past a checkpoint as a disturbing symbol of growing criminal audacity. We urge the Federal Government and security agencies to strengthen intelligence-led operations, equip checkpoints with real-time communication systems and train officers on proactive response protocols. Every sighting of criminal convoys should trigger surveillance and coordinated pursuit. Insecurity cannot be defeated by courage alone; it requires technology, intelligence and swift inter-agency cooperation.
