WORLD CUP 2026: CANADA MAKE HISTORY AS FIRST HOST SINCE USA ’94 TO REACH KNOCKOUTS ON JUST FOUR POINTS

Canada have etched their name into FIFA World Cup history after becoming the first host nation since the United States in 1994 to qualify for the knockout stage with just four points from the group phase.

Despite a 2-1 defeat to Switzerland in their final Group B match, the co-hosts advanced to the Round of 32 after finishing second in the group with one win, one draw, and one loss. Their campaign began with a 1-1 draw against Bosnia and Herzegovina before a commanding 6-0 victory over Qatar secured their first-ever World Cup win and put them in a strong position to progress.

The achievement marks another milestone for Canadian football, with Jesse Marsch’s side reaching the knockout rounds on home soil despite missing out on top spot in the group.

According to Opta, Canada are the first host nation to advance from the World Cup group stage with as few as four points since the USA accomplished the feat at the 1994 tournament, highlighting the rarity of their qualification.

Canada will now face South Africa in the Round of 32 as they look to extend their historic World Cup journey.
