#2027 Elections: Five Governors Allegedly Poised to Join APC Amid Political Speculation

As Nigeria approaches the 2027 general elections, rumors are swirling about the potential defection of five opposition governors to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

According to a report by Leadership Newspaper, the governors allegedly considering a switch are Alex Otti (Abia), Peter Mbah (Enugu), Siminalayi Fubara (Rivers), Umoh Eno (Akwa Ibom), and Sheriff Oborevwori (Delta).

Adeleke’s Alleged Defection Debunked

Unconfirmed reports have also linked Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke to a possible move from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC to secure a second term. However, Adeleke’s media aide, Olawale Rasheed, has dismissed these claims as unfounded.

Internal Party Tensions

The governors, currently serving their first terms, are reportedly grappling with internal challenges within their respective parties, Labour Party (LP) and PDP. Party instability and factional disputes are cited as possible reasons for their consideration of alternative political platforms.

A History of Political Realignments

Since the return of democracy in 1999, party defections have been a recurring feature of Nigeria’s political landscape, with over 20 governors switching allegiances while in office.

Denials and APC’s Strategy

Despite the rumors, officials from Abia, Enugu, and Delta have strongly refuted the claims, labeling them as attempts to sow discord. Political analysts suggest the speculations might be part of the APC’s broader strategy to weaken opposition strongholds ahead of the 2027 elections.

While the governors and their parties have denied any plans to defect, the unfolding political dynamics continue to fuel public interest as the election season draws closer.
