Popular dancer Kaffy Shafau has revealed that her marriage ended because she lacked a full understanding of what marriage truly entails.
In an interview with media personality Chude Jideonwo, Kaffy reflected on her decade-long marriage to Joseph Ameh, which lasted from June 2012 until their divorce in January 2022. She noted that many couples, including herself, enter marriage without proper preparation or guidance.

Kaffy advocated for a more structured approach to marriage, suggesting that couples undergo counselling, mental health evaluations, and a year-long programme focused on human behavioural sciences before tying the knot. She highlighted the irony that obtaining a marriage certificate is often easier than getting a driver’s licence, despite marriage having a far-reaching impact on individuals and society.
“I was not educated enough for marriage, and a lot of us aren’t. Our parents are not preparing us enough; living through their eyes is not enough education about marriage,” she said.
“It is a special course that needs to be taken. We can’t have a society that issues a marriage certificate easier than a driver’s licence. There are many mental health assessments that need to take place. It’s not only counselling; couples should undergo mental evaluation.
“There should be a mandatory requirement for drug tests, mental evaluations, couples therapy, and a one-year programme in human behavioural sciences before two people come together to potentially harm each other and the children they may bring into the world.”
