CHELSEA’S WEIGHT-GAIN PROGRAM BLAMED FOR ESTEVAO INJURY

The mood around Chelsea Football Club has quickly shifted from excitement to concern after teenage star Estevao Willian suffered a serious hamstring injury.

The 18-year-old picked up a Grade 4 tear during Chelsea’s 1–0 loss to Manchester United, an injury severe enough to rule him out for the rest of the Premier League season. It has also raised doubts about his chances of representing Brazil national football team at the 2026 World Cup.

Reports from the UK suggest the setback has sparked debate among fans and analysts, particularly over how the club has handled the youngster’s physical development since arriving from Palmeiras.

Estevao is said to have undergone a rapid transformation, adding between 7kg and 9kg of muscle in a short period. The programme, reportedly overseen by Chelsea’s medical team in partnership with Volt Sports Science, was designed to prepare him for the physical demands of English football.

However, that rapid “bulking” has now come under scrutiny. Critics argue that while muscles can adapt quickly to intense training, tendons and ligaments take much longer to strengthen. This imbalance, some experts say, may have contributed to the injury.

Observers also note that Estevao moved from a relatively slight 63kg frame to around 72kg in a short time, raising concerns that the added mass may have placed excessive strain on his body, especially during high-speed sprints.

Some fans have even compared the situation to past cases involving young players like Mason Mount, suggesting a pattern in how emerging talents are physically developed at the club.

But sources close to Chelsea’s medical staff have pushed back on the criticism, insisting the injury is more likely linked to workload. Estevao has already played over 130 professional matches before turning 19, a demanding schedule that many believe increases injury risk regardless of conditioning.

With a recovery timeline estimated at four to six months, attention is now turning to how Chelsea manages its young talents going forward. For now, the focus remains on Estevao’s rehabilitation—and whether he can return in time to regain momentum ahead of a crucial period in his career.
