KANO CENTRAL APC STAKEHOLDERS REJECT ‘IMPOSED CONSENSUS’, DEMAND IMMEDIATE DIRECT PRIMARIES

Fresh political tension is brewing within the Kano Central chapter of the All Progressives Congress following a strongly worded petition submitted to the national leadership of the party rejecting what stakeholders described as the alleged imposition of former Kano governor, Ibrahim Shekarau, as a “consensus candidate” for the 2027 Kano Central Senatorial ticket.

The petition, addressed to the National Chairman of the APC at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja, called for the immediate approval and conduct of transparent direct primaries, warning that any attempt to impose a candidate could trigger deep divisions, voter apathy, and internal discontent ahead of the 2027 elections.

The document, signed by a cross-section of stakeholders including academics, professionals, traders, market leaders, grassroots mobilisers, transport workers and students, accused unnamed forces within the party of allegedly pressuring aspirants to withdraw from the race under threats that refusal could be interpreted as anti-party conduct.

Signatories to the petition include Prof. Bashir Suleiman Farouk — Professor of Political Science, Nassarawa GRA, Kano., an academic and policy analyst; Dr. Musa Abdullahi, a medical practitioner; Alhaji Kabiru Yusuf, a trader; Hajiya Rukayyat Bello, a teacher; Hajiya Zainab Lawal, a market leader; Comrade Sani Umar, a commercial motorcycle operator; Aminu Garba, a student leader; and Alhaji Mukhtar Wali, a grassroots mobiliser.

The stakeholders argued that what was being presented publicly as a consensus arrangement did not reflect a genuine voluntary agreement among aspirants and supporters across the senatorial district.

According to the petition:

“Consensus arrangements can only strengthen party unity when they are voluntary, transparent and mutually accepted without pressure or perceived imposition.”

The group warned that any process viewed as manipulated or predetermined could seriously damage confidence in the APC within Kano Central, one of Nigeria’s most politically strategic senatorial districts.

Political observers say the development reflects growing unease among sections of the APC grassroots in Kano, where concerns over internal democracy, stakeholder participation, and candidate selection have increasingly become sensitive issues ahead of the next election cycle.

The petitioners maintained that many party members had invested significant resources, mobilisation efforts and political structures in anticipation of open and transparent primaries before the alleged consensus arrangement emerged.

They insisted that direct primaries remain the most democratic and credible mechanism for resolving competing political interests while strengthening the legitimacy of whoever eventually emerges as the party’s candidate.

“Many supporters now feel discouraged that aspirants they mobilised behind were unable to test their popularity through an open democratic process,” the petition stated.

The stakeholders further urged the APC national leadership to review the circumstances surrounding the alleged consensus arrangement and ensure that all aspirants are treated fairly in accordance with democratic principles and the party’s constitution.

Analysts say the controversy could become a major test of internal democracy within the APC ahead of the 2027 elections, particularly in Kano State, widely regarded as one of Nigeria’s most influential political battlegrounds due to its voting population and strategic electoral importance.

Kano has historically played a decisive role in presidential and legislative elections, with political mobilisation in the state often heavily influenced by grassroots participation and perceptions of fairness within party structures.

Some party observers believe that allowing direct primaries could help reduce internal resentment and produce a stronger, more broadly accepted candidate capable of uniting various blocs within the APC.

Others warn that unresolved disputes over candidate selection could create openings for defections, protest votes, or weakened mobilisation during the general elections.

A senior APC stakeholder familiar with political developments in Kano told Headlinenews.news that attempts to suppress competitive participation within major political parties often produce unintended consequences.

“You cannot build long-term party stability by alienating the grassroots,” the stakeholder said. “Kano politics is highly participatory. People want to feel that their votes, structures and mobilisation efforts matter.”

The petition has already generated intense debate within political circles in Kano, with supporters of direct primaries arguing that transparent internal contests would strengthen the APC’s democratic image and reduce accusations of elite political imposition.

Although there has been no official response yet from the APC national leadership or supporters of the alleged consensus arrangement, political attention is now shifting toward whether the party will allow a competitive primary or uphold the reported consensus deal.

For many observers, the issue now extends beyond a single senatorial ticket.

It has become part of a wider national conversation about internal democracy within political parties, grassroots participation, and whether consensus arrangements are being used as tools for unity or instruments for political exclusion.

In a democracy already facing declining public trust in institutions and political processes, analysts warn that the handling of the Kano Central contest could send powerful signals about the APC’s commitment to openness, participation and internal democratic legitimacy ahead of 2027.

The National Patriots

“The National Patriots have called on major political parties to protect internal democracy by ensuring transparent and participatory candidate selection processes ahead of the 2027 elections. The group warned that consensus arrangements imposed without broad stakeholder acceptance risk weakening party unity and alienating grassroots supporters. According to the organisation, direct primaries remain one of the most credible mechanisms for strengthening democratic legitimacy, reducing political resentment, and ensuring that candidates

emerge through genuine popular support rather than perceived elite arrangements or political pressure.”
