Doctor Zo has advised Nigerian parents to remain actively involved in the lives of their children studying abroad, warning that a lack of supervision can expose them to drug abuse and mental health challenges.
Speaking in a video shared on X, the Canada-based doctor expressed concern over the experiences of some African students studying in Canada, using the case of a young Nigerian student to highlight the importance of parental guidance.
According to him, many parents focus mainly on providing financial support after sending their children overseas for education, while overlooking the need for regular supervision and emotional support.
Doctor Zo noted that the legal status of cannabis in Canada makes it more accessible, warning that some students become involved in drug use, which can contribute to psychological and mental health problems.
He stressed that studying abroad is not the issue but advised parents to ensure their children have trusted guardians or family members who can regularly monitor their wellbeing and provide support when necessary.
Drawing from his own experience as a parent living in Canada, Doctor Zo said raising children requires constant communication and involvement, even for families living under the same roof.
He explained that he and his wife make it a priority to speak with their children frequently, adding that parents living thousands of kilometres away should make an even greater effort to stay connected with their children.
Doctor Zo urged parents to see the situation as a reminder that regular communication, guidance and proper supervision remain essential for students studying overseas, regardless of the financial support they receive.
