Tennessee Governor Bill Lee Endorses Trump Critic’s Rival in Republican House Primary
Tennessee Governor Bill Lee has thrown his support behind former state Agriculture Commissioner Charlie Hatcher in his Republican primary race against U.S. Rep. Andy Ogles, who has the backing of former President Donald Trump.
In a video released on Tuesday, Lee praised Hatcher, describing him as a longtime friend and highlighting his conservative credentials and years of public service.
“Charlie Hatcher and I have been friends for 25 years. For seven years, he served as my commissioner of agriculture. I know Charlie, I know his conservative values and how much he loves our country,” Lee said.
The governor also claimed that Hatcher has supported President Trump since the beginning of his political movement.
Lee’s endorsement came just days before the August 6 primary election, although early voting had already concluded.
“Join me in voting for Charlie Hatcher this Thursday, August 6,” Lee urged voters.
Hatcher welcomed the endorsement, saying he was honoured to receive support from someone he had known for decades.
“I am deeply honoured to receive the endorsement of my longtime friend, Governor Bill Lee. Bill and I have known each other for decades, and I have tremendous respect for his faith, his leadership and his commitment to serving the people of Tennessee,” Hatcher wrote in a Facebook post.
He also expressed appreciation for Lee’s decision to appoint him as Tennessee’s Commissioner of Agriculture, saying the role allowed him to serve farmers, families and rural communities across the state.
The race has drawn attention because Hatcher is challenging Ogles, a Trump-backed congressman seeking another term in the Republican primary. The outcome will determine the party’s candidate ahead of the general election.
