Four community vigilantes have been killed after gunmen attacked Shurum village in Dorowa Babuje, Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State, raising fresh concerns about the safety of residents and local security volunteers.

The attack reportedly occurred at about 11:56 p.m. on Friday while the vigilantes were on duty protecting the community. A resident, Bulus Bature, said the attackers struck while the volunteers were keeping watch. He expressed sadness over the killings, noting that the victims were targeted while trying to protect their people.

The National Publicity Secretary of the Berom Youth Moulders Association (BYM), Rwang Tengwong, confirmed the incident to Vanguard, stating that four people had been killed. He condemned the attack and called on security agencies to investigate the incident and ensure those responsible were brought to justice.

Tengwong warned that residents could not continue living in fear while community members volunteering to provide security were being killed. He said the incident had further heightened concerns among people who rely on local vigilantes to help protect their communities.

The association called on the government and relevant security agencies to strengthen security around Shurum village and neighbouring communities to prevent further attacks. Authorities were also urged to take necessary steps to protect residents and ensure the safety of those assisting with community security.
