Governors across the northern states have declared their full backing for President Bola Tinubu ahead of the 2027 general elections, emphasizing that the region must honor the power-sharing agreement established between Northern and Southern Nigeria in 1999. Speaking on behalf of the northern governors during the inauguration of the Arewa for Asiwaju (A4A) national secretariat in Abuja—an event commissioned by Vice President Kashim Shettima—Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf confirmed that all democratic and patriotic northern states stand firmly behind the President.
Addressing the audience, the governor recalled the mutual political understanding from 1999 that permitted the North to complete two consecutive terms in office, leading to former President Muhammadu Buhari serving for eight years. He pointed out that Southern Nigeria respected this agreement by refraining from presenting candidates during that period, largely owing to the support of President Tinubu. Although acknowledging that the power-sharing arrangement is not explicitly written in the Nigerian Constitution, the governor stressed that the “constitution of common sense” dictates that the region must honor its promise and maintain political integrity.
Highlighting the President’s performance in office, the governor called on party loyalists and supporters across the region to express their political stance openly without fear. He reaffirmed their collective membership in the All Progressives Congress (APC) and urged all stakeholders to work unitedly to secure victory for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima on January 16. Furthermore, he encouraged the public to extend the same level of political support to members of the National Assembly, state governors, and representatives in state assemblies nationwide.
In his address, Ibrahim Shekarau, Chairman of the A4A Board of Trustees, expressed gratitude to Vice President Shettima for officiating the ceremony, describing him as the highest-elected leader in northern Nigeria. Shekarau praised the APC leadership, lawmakers, governors, and delegates representing all 19 northern states and the Federal Capital Territory. He assured the newly established secretariat staff that the board of trustees remains dedicated to supporting their operational strategies as the organization prepares to execute its political campaign roadmap.
