The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume, has called on former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and other northern politicians aspiring for the presidency in 2027 to defer their ambitions until 2031. Akume made this appeal during an interview on TVC’s Politics Today on Sunday.
Akume emphasized the need for unity and stability in Nigeria, urging northern leaders to allow President Bola Ahmed Tinubu the opportunity to complete a potential second term.
“I appeal to my northern brothers to wait till 2031 to contest for the presidency. It is not yet time for the north to enter the race. Let us not jeopardize our country for personal ambition,” Akume stated.
The SGF argued that Tinubu, representing the southern region, should serve a full eight years before power returns to the north. He added, “If it is God’s will for Alhaji Atiku Abubakar to become president, even at the age of 90, it will happen. But for now, let power remain in the south until 2031.”
On Economic Reforms
Akume also addressed concerns about the proposed tax reform bills, describing them as visionary efforts to rescue and rebuild Nigeria’s economy.
He defended the Tinubu administration’s policies, including the removal of fuel subsidies and the harmonization of foreign exchange rates, highlighting them as crucial steps toward economic recovery.
“It’s easy to destroy but difficult to rebuild. These reforms are necessary to reposition Nigeria after years of economic mismanagement,” Akume said.
The tax reform package, which includes the Nigeria Tax Bill, Nigeria Tax Administration Bill, and the Joint Revenue Board Establishment Bill, has sparked debates. Critics argue the changes to value-added tax (VAT) distribution could disproportionately impact certain states.
Akume urged Nigerians to support the legislative process, stating that Tinubu still enjoys goodwill despite the short-term economic challenges.
This call for patience and unity comes as Nigeria navigates a complex economic landscape while balancing political transitions.
