Notorious bandit leader Bello Turji has reportedly issued threats to attack communities in Zamfara State unless security agencies release his detained ally, Bako Wurgi. Turji, who has a history of orchestrating violence, has reached out to village heads and influential figures in Shinkafi, warning of dire consequences if his demands are not met.
Escalating Threats and Hostage Danger
Sources reveal that Turji contacted traditional leaders in the Shinkafi area, threatening to unleash violence unless Wurgi is freed. “He has vowed to attack communities and has already contacted village heads and chiefs, pressuring them to intervene for Wurgi’s release,” a source familiar with the situation disclosed.
Turji has also pledged significant resources, including money and livestock, to secure his ally’s freedom. However, his threats have taken a darker turn, as he allegedly plans to execute some of the hostages in his custody. These captives reportedly include residents from Isa, Sabon Birni, and Shinkafi.
“He has vowed to kill the hostages if his demands are not met,” a counter-insurgency expert, Zagazola Makama, warned, adding that widespread violence could erupt across eastern Sokoto and Shinkafi towns if the situation escalates.
A History of Intimidation and Influence
This is not the first time Turji has used intimidation to achieve his goals. Five years ago, he threatened similar violence to secure the release of his ally, Dikko Chida, prompting negotiations that ultimately led to Chida’s freedom.
Bako Wurgi, also known as Baka NaGarba, was arrested on December 14 by troops of the 1 Brigade of the Nigerian Army in Shinkafi. Wurgi was reportedly receiving treatment for injuries sustained during a clash with a rival group.
Counter-insurgency sources report that Wurgi is deeply entrenched in banditry, serving as an arms smuggler with international connections. His familial ties to Turji, including through his son Sani Duna, who allegedly operates as Turji’s getaway driver, further underscore the depth of their network.
Wurgi’s Role in High-Profile Crimes
Wurgi’s arrest is significant due to his alleged involvement in the assassination of Alhaji Isa Mohammed Bawa, the Sarkin Gobir of Sabon Birni. Earlier this year, Wurgi and his associates demanded N60 million and five motorcycles as ransom for Bawa’s remains.
Makama also noted that Wurgi played a key role in kidnappings and killings involving failed ransom negotiations.
Government’s Dilemma
Authorities now face a critical decision: hold firm in their stance against banditry or negotiate to avoid the bloodshed Turji has promised. Turji’s threats underscore the need for decisive action, as conceding to his demands risks emboldening his network further.
The government’s response to this crisis could set a precedent for handling the persistent threat of banditry in northern Nigeria.
